All Of The Antics Hinge On That

Few writer-actors have had as consistent a run of shows on HBO as Danny McBride, whose odes to idiocy began with his series “Eastbound & Down,” followed by “Vice Principals” and currently with “The Righteous Gemstones,” a portrayal of a dysfunctional family of televangelists and megachurch pastors now in its second season.

“What’s unique about this season,” said McBride, “is we get a peek behind the curtain at the patriarch of the family, Eli Gemstone (played by John Goodman), and we get to see more about where he comes from and most importantly how far he’s willing to go. All of the antics hinge on that. So we very much do a deep-dive on the head of this devious family.”

In addition to his HBO shows, McBride’s credits include the comedies “Pineapple Express” and “This Is the End,” as well as the sci-fi horror movie “Alien: Covenant” just to name a few. “I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve had a very fun career that has not been filled with too many embarrassing moments,” he said, “but I kind of revel in embarrassing moments. I like comedy that’s cringe-y.”

When asked about a worst moment in his career, the story he told was from a time in his life “when things were just getting going,” and he said he still feels “weird about it and a little gross when I think back to it.”

“(Director) David Gordon Green and I had made this little film in 2011 called ‘Your Highness’ (a medieval stoner comedy) for Universal. It’s this a pretty raunchy R-rated movie that was made for the 13-year-old in both of us. That’s not necessarily the type of movie that everyone is looking to have out in theaters and when we put the movie in front of test audiences, it became clear that there were a lot of people that didn’t care for the film (laughs).

“So as we were getting closer and closer to the release, Universal kind of changed their tune from having a premiere to morphing into this thing where it was like: Why don’t you and David go on the road and take the movie to different colleges and see what they think (laughs) and see if you can convince people to see this movie.

“So they sent David Green and myself on this weeklong road trip through America. I think we went to eight to 10 colleges. Our careers were just taking off and we had never really done anything like this, where we’d show up in a town and show the movie; this was all leading up to the movie coming out at the end of the week. And we’re not idiots, we could tell that the movie was not going to do well. Everyday that would pass, there was another review that would come out and critics can be ruthless, ya’ know?

“So we were sort of left out there alone, promoting this film that apparently no one liked (laughs) and it was this awkward thing of trying to maintain this enthusiasm and excitement for this thing that was leaving people feeling less than enthused. Every day of the trip it just got a little bit harder, and more like you just wanted to hide and go back to your house and sleep.

“We both came from these small towns, so even the idea of your name showing up in the press or in newspapers is a big deal to every teacher you ever had or every relative that you know. So when all that stuff’s coming out and people are panning you, it makes you want to hide, where you’re like: ‘Oh God, everyone I know is Googling this and they’re seeing this and I wish the whole world could turn this all off for the next two weeks and let this go away.’ (Laughs)

“Luckily the end of this trip had us finishing in Winston Salem at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, which is where David Green and I both went to film school; it’s where we met. So we screened the movie there and interestingly it put a lot of things into perspective for us, because we were presenting this movie to all these younger versions of ourselves who were eagerly looking at us to see what we had to offer them. It brought things around for us and we were like, you know what? Who cares if everyone doesn’t like this movie. We know where we came from. We put our all into this. And that night we went to a college party and we got wasted with those students (laughs) and we were hoisted on their shoulders as champions.

“And the abysmal box office could not hinder our spirits from that point. We felt a sense of accomplishment and we both agreed that the movie was just ahead of its time. And that was how we closed that chapter in our lives.”
